Mother's Day originated in the United States.

• In 1906, on May 9th, Anna Jarvis's mother passed away in Philadelphia, US, leaving Anna in deep grief. On the first anniversary of her mother's death the following year, Anna organized an event to remember her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their own mothers in a similar way.

• After that, she traveled around, lobbying and appealing to all sectors of society to call for the establishment of Mother's Day. Her appeal received an enthusiastic response.
• On May 10th, 1913, the US Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution, which was signed into a proclamation by President Wilson, designating the second Sunday of May each year as Mother's Day.
• This move inspired countries around the world to follow suit. By the time Anna passed away in 1948, 43 countries had established Mother's Day.
• Many other countries in the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times of the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium, like the United States, celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
