在乐音体系中，具有独立名称的7个音级叫做基本音级。这7个音级表就是现在钢琴上白色琴键所发出的声音。
基本音级的名称有音名和唱明两种标记方法，每个音级的音名是用字母来标记的。唱名则利用读音来表示。（关于音名和唱名的关系，我们将在后面的调式与调性的部分具体讲解。）以C大调为例：C大调基本音级的音名从低到高分别 标记为：C、D、E、F、G、A、B与其对应的唱名则是do、re、mi、fa、sol、la、si 七个读音。
在乐音体系中7个基本音级的标记（音名和唱名）是循环使用的。即C、D、E、F、G、A、B之后又回到c、d、e、f、g、a、b或do、re、mi、fa、so l、la、si之后还是do、re、mi、fa、sol、la、si……如此循环往复。
但是，每一个循环中的音级是音高不同的，也就是说，虽然音名（或唱名）相同但音高是 不一样的。在标记音名时时采用大写、小写，或者是在大写字母后加入下标、小 写字母后加入上标的方法加以区别。如：C、a、a1(后面的数字“1”应为上标形式）、B3（数字“3”应为下标形式）。其中两个相邻的、具有同样名称的音的关 系叫做“八度”。
