后来，楚军猛烈地进攻汉军，切断了汉军对外联络的通道，把汉王刘邦围困在荥阳城。时间长了，汉王很担心，请求把荥阳以西的土地割让给楚军求和。项羽不答应。汉王对陈平说：“天下这样乱纷纷的，什么时候才能平定啊？”陈平说：“项羽对待别人，礼仪上很恭敬、关怀，所以那些崇尚廉洁、气节、喜欢礼仪的士人大多投靠他。但是对于按照功劳封赏给爵位和城邑，他就很看重，轻易不封，士人也因此和他不亲密。现在大王对人怠慢，缺少礼仪，所以那些不贪财、讲气节的人就不来投靠你；但是大王能用爵位、城邑让人富足，那些愚顽、才能不突出、贪图利益、不讲廉耻的人就大多来投靠汉王。您和项羽，如果真的有一个能够去掉两方面的短处，发扬两方面的长处，那么天下用手指一指，用鞭子挥一挥就平定了。但是大王行为放肆，好侮辱人，无法得到廉节之士的拥护（，所以是做不到扬长避短的，就只能从楚军方面找漏洞了）。研究楚军方面，的确有可以用来制造混乱的因素。项王那边正直无私的大臣，只有亚父范增、锺离眛、龙且、周殷之类的，不过几个人罢了。大王果真能够拿出几万斤黄金（铜），实施反间计，离间他们君臣的关系，让他们从心里产生怀疑，项王为人性格妒忌，相信谗言，一定会内部自相诛杀。汉军借此机会出兵攻打他，击败楚军没有问题。”汉王认为确实这样，就拿出黄金（铜）四万斤，送给陈平，让他随便用，不问他怎么用的。陈平有了大量的金钱，就在楚军中任意实施反间计，传播谣言说锺离眛等给项羽当将军，功劳太多了，然而最终却没有划出一块土地来自己称王，想要和汉军一道，灭了项羽，把他的土地分了自己称王。项羽果然从心里对锺离眜等人产生了不信任。在项王已经产生怀疑的时候，有一次派使者到汉军方面来。汉王为他准备了一桌丰盛的宴席，端着送进来。见了楚军使者，就假装惊讶地说：“我还以为是亚父范增的使者呢，原来却是项王的使者！”把宴席又拿走，换成准备得很潦草的饭食招待楚军使者。楚军使者回来，原原本本地告诉了项羽。项王果然对范增产生了极大的怀疑。范增想要赶紧攻下荥阳城，项王不信任他，不肯听从他的意见。范增听说项王怀疑他，非常生气地说：“天下的事情大体平定了，剩下的事情君王您自己办吧！我请求您把我这把老骨头还给我，让我回家吧！”在回去的路上，还没到彭城，背上恶疮发作而死。陈平于是夜里从荥阳城东门送出两千名女子，楚军就攻击东门，陈平就和汉王从城西门乘夜逃出去。于是进入函谷关，在关中收拾散兵，整好队伍又出兵向东。
